ACUMEN & SYNCHROMODE jointly invite you to their two day final event

Brussels, 21-22 April 2026

Join us on 21–22 April 2026 in Brussels (COMET Louise) for the joint final event of ACUMEN and SYNCHROMODE, two EU-funded Horizon EUROPE projects advancing multimodal transport management solutions across Europe.

This two-day event will be divided into interactive sessions to feature research learnings for cities, policy work, governance framework design, impact assessment and cities' testimonials:

Actionable research findings for cities transport operators and policy makers

The symposium will showcase the results and lessons learnt from several multimodal traffic and transport management projects. Each session will highlight the research outcomes and share insights gained from pilot cities, offering a comprehensive view of the challenges and successes encountered during implementation. These sessions will explore critical questions such as:

  • How to effectively handle heterogeneous mobility data sources?
  • How to create data-driven and AI-based traffic prediction and optimisation systems?
  • How to coordinate all modes of transport within traffic management frameworks?
  • How to handle disruptions and build resilience in traffic networks?
  • How to build the right governance framework to integrate these tools into the current traffic management systems?
  • How to evaluate the effectiveness of AI and digital tools in traffic management systems?

The projects will showcase the tools created to meet cities’ needs:

  • The SYNCHROMODE toolbox: data driven ICT tools for improving the management of transport operations from a multimodal perspective and managing the overall transport network. Our three innovative services are a transport network-wide data exchange system, a cooperative dashboard for real-time monitoring, and a resilient multimodal transport network support tool.
  • The ACUMEN Digital Twin: a digital twin integrating the cities’ data to simulate transport operations by running customisable traffic management scenarios
  • The ACUMEN AI readiness assessment tool for cities: an online self-assessment tools for cities to assess their readiness to integrate AI in their traffic management operations with advice on how to move forward.

Pilot testimonials and key lessons for replication in other cities

The projects gathered seven pilot cities, each of them showcasing a different way to use concrete research results to improve their traffic management operations:

  • Helsinki (ACUMEN): nudging users to opt for alternative, more environmentally friendly transport modes via a traffic-related app (ACUMEN)
  • Luxembourg (ACUMEN): impact study of introducing automated vehicles into a door-to-door journey
  • Athens (ACUMEN): traffic and transport simulations to provide short-term forecasts to support optimal traffic management decisions.
  • Amsterdam (ACUMEN): multi-modal transport management simulations to ensure seamless travels in critical disruptions
  • Province of South-Holland (SYNCHROMODE) : traffic management for infrastructure works and seasonal touristic areas (Keukenhof & beaches).
  • Madrid (SYNCHROMODE) : solutions for the integration of urban last-mile delivery with public transport services and to coordinate them with other transport modes, enabling more efficient multimodal trip chains.
  • Thessaloniki (SYNCHROMODE): utilisation of all the services of the SYNCHROMODE Toolbox, implementing those in the real world (TEN-T main corridors, Peripheral ring road, main urban road network).
