From EU-funded innovation to real-world impact in European cities

Join us in Brussels on 21–22 April 2026 for the joint final event of ACUMEN and SYNCHROMODE, two Horizon Europe projects delivering practical, scalable solutions for multimodal, data-driven, and resilient traffic management.

Over two days, cities, transport authorities, industry leaders, researchers, and EU policy makers will come together to explore how EU-funded innovation is being translated into operational tools, digital platforms, and governance frameworks that improve real-world multimodal mobility management across Europe.

This flagship event will showcase concrete deployments, pilot results, and transferable lessons - demonstrating how EU-funded research investments are delivering measurable impact for cities and transport networks.

Actionable findings and deployable solutions for cities, operators and policy makers

The Final Event will present tested tools, validated methodologies, and real-world lessons learned, demonstrating how multimodal traffic management can move from research to implementation.

Through interactive sessions and live demonstrations, participants will explore key challenges such as:

  • How to integrate heterogeneous mobility data into coherent, decision-ready systems
  • How to design and deploy AI-based traffic prediction and optimisation tools
  • How to coordinate all transport modes within network-wide traffic management frameworks
  • How to manage disruptions and strengthen resilience in urban transport networks
  • How to establish governance structures that enable digital and AI integration
  • How to evaluate the effectiveness and scalability of AI-driven traffic management solutions

Showcasing Concrete EU-Funded Solutions

The SYNCHROMODE Toolbox

A suite of data-driven ICT services supporting multimodal transport operations at network level, including:

  • a transport network-wide data exchange system
  • a cooperative dashboard for real-time monitoring
  • a resilient multimodal transport network support tool.

The ACUMEN Digital Twin

A city-level digital twin integrating mobility data to simulate traffic management scenarios and test “what-if” strategies before real-world deployment.

The ACUMEN AI Readiness Assessment Tool

An online self-assessment platform enabling cities to evaluate their preparedness for AI integration in traffic management and identify practical next steps for implementation.

A European Platform for Exchange and Collaboration

In addition to showcasing the results of ACUMEN and SYNCHROMODE, the Final Event will feature selected contributions from other Horizon Europe projects, cities, transport authorities, and industry stakeholders working on multimodal, AI-driven, and resilient traffic management solutions.

Through the Call for Contributions, external participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Present complementary tools, methods, and operational experiences
  • Share deployment challenges and lessons learned
  • Discuss governance, scalability, and policy implications
  • Contribute to shaping future research and deployment priorities

Selected contributions will be integrated into thematic sessions alongside ACUMEN and SYNCHROMODE results, fostering direct dialogue and knowledge exchange.

Real-world pilots and key lessons for replication across Europe

Seven European pilot sites demonstrate how these solutions work in practice and how they can be adapted to different urban contexts:

  • Helsinki (ACUMEN): nudging users to opt for alternative, more environmentally friendly transport modes via a traffic-related app.
  • Luxembourg (ACUMEN): impact study of introducing automated vehicles into a door-to-door journey.
  • Athens (ACUMEN): traffic and transport simulations to provide short-term forecasts to support optimal traffic management decisions.
  • Amsterdam (ACUMEN): multi-modal transport management simulations to ensure seamless travels in critical disruptions.
  • Province of South-Holland (SYNCHROMODE): coordinated traffic management strategies for long-duration events, large-scale road works, and major seasonal tourist flows such as Keukenhof and coastal beach areas.
  • Madrid (SYNCHROMODE): integrated coordination between mobility and logistics operators, optimising load balancing between metropolitan bus and freight services while aligning last-mile delivery with public transport operations.
  • Thessaloniki (SYNCHROMODE): full-scale implementation of resilient multimodal traffic management across urban and peri-urban networks, supporting planned and unplanned events while enhancing multi-source data quality and reliability.
